In this series of travel guides about Chiang Rai, we show you the best things to do in the most interesting city in northern Thailand. Activity number 4 on the list is visiting the Goddess of Mercy, also known as the Guan Yin statue or Wat Huay Pla Kang.
Located on the outskirts of Chiang Rai, there is a huge statue of the bodhisattva Guan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. In Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a person who follows the path to become equal to the Buddha. Guan Yin, originally a goddess in Chinese Buddhist mythology, spread throughout Southeast Asia, and today she is deeply rooted in various Buddhist cultures.
This complex is divided into three main sections: a white prayer hall, a 9-story pagoda, and, of course, the impressive statue of Guan Yin.
The prayer hall is a building dedicated to monks so they can pray and meditate in peace, offering a tranquil environment.
You can climb the 9-story pagoda and enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of Chiang Rai. From there, the landscape of the hills and green fields will leave you breathless.
If you’re looking for a peaceful place, full of culture and spirituality, this is one of those sites you must visit in Chiang Rai.
